A Summer Message from the Head of School and Lower School Principal


Dear Lower School Parents,

I hope this letter finds you enjoying a more relaxed pace on these warm summer days. Here at the Lower School, we are in the midst of ordering instructional materials and preparing the classrooms for the 2019-20 school year, as we look forward to the opening days of school and the arrival of our students next month.

I want to take this opportunity to welcome our new families to Holy Spirit Prep. I also want to thank our student ambassadors and their families for arranging various opportunities for our new students to form friendships with their classmates prior to the start of school. Your gestures of friendship will help to ensure that our new students have a very positive start to the school year.

New Faculty and Staff
We have some new faculty and staff members joining us this year, as well as a few faculty members who will be teaching new grade levels.

I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Madeliene Flanagan as our Director of Teaching, Learning, and Student Success. In this role, Mrs. Flanagan will oversee whole-school curriculum planning, teacher evaluation, counseling programs, and our resource center. I have known Mrs. Flanagan since 2005 and am delighted that she is joining our team. She brings with her a wealth of Lower School experience, including as a Catholic administrator and principal for the past 22 years.  

Update to Handbook
We have just posted the 2019-20 Lower School Handbook. I encourage you to take the time to read it before school starts and take note of the updated Go-to Guide and policies, including:
  • those related to homework,
  • cell phones/smart watches,
  • and make-up. 
At the front of the Handbook, there is a link to an online acknowledgement form that I ask that you submit before the first day of school.

Mrs. Marshall is adding an honors math track for 6th-7th grades.  She will e-mail parents of qualifying students next week with more information.

SchoolDoc emailed its annual request for student medical information last week. If you did not receive this, please e-mail the school clinic at clinic@holyspiritprep.org. Please note that health records must be current in order for students to start on Wednesday, August 21.


Morning Shuttle Between Campuses
This school year, a complimentary shuttle will run between the Lower and Upper School campuses each morning. This will help families who drop students off at both campuses each morning. Shuttle capacity is limited, so priority in registration will be given to parents with students at multiple campuses. The shuttle is open to students in Pre-K2-12th grade.

Shuttle Schedule
Shuttle service begins Monday, August 26. The shuttle will depart the Lower School campus at 7:20am for the Upper School. The shuttle will then depart the Upper School at 7:40am for the Lower School. Shuttles will depart at their scheduled times; families arriving to campus after shuttle departure time are responsible for their own transportation between campuses.

Shuttle Capacity
Operating the shuttle is contingent upon receiving five registrations per shuttle ride. Enrollment in the shuttle program is capped at 14 students per shuttle. To maintain a cost-effective program for our families, enrolled families are committing to a minimum of four shuttle rides a week.


THE OPENING OF SCHOOL

Monday, August 19 • 5th Grade Meet-and-Greet • Intermediate Building

With the 5th grade returning to the Intermediate Building, its teachers will be available on Monday, August 19, from 8:00am-9:00am for a meet-and-greet and to provide locker assignments. 5th grade students and their parents are welcome to come on this day. For 5th grade families who cannot make this time, the teachers will host another meet-and-greet orientation on Welcome Back Day from 11:00am-12:00pm.

Tuesday, August 20 • Welcome Back Day
Families new to the Lower School are invited to an orientation in the media center on Tuesday, August 20, at 8:00am.

Parents and students should come to school between 8:30am-12:00pm to visit classrooms and meet their teachers.  (Students do not wear their uniforms on Welcome Back Day). Representatives from the Parent Volunteer Association (PVA), campus ministry, PAWS extended school program, and other extracurricular programs will be available in the cafetorium to answer questions and to help you sign up for activities.

Metro Music Makers, our on-campus instrumental program provider, will host a sample “after-school instrumental class” on Welcome Back Day for students in Pre-K4 and Kindergarten/Pre-1st.

Wednesday, August 21 • First Day of School
School begins at 8:00am and ends at 3:00pm. The earliest students may arrive at school is 7:40am—or at 7:20am if enrolled in the Early Drop-Off program.

Upon arrival, students in Pre-K4 – 4th grade should proceed to the cafetorium, where they will be supervised until they are escorted to their classrooms at 8:00am.

Students in grades 5–7 should go to their homerooms in the Intermediate Building. Please note: On Monday mornings, the 5th–7th grade students will drop off their book bags at their homerooms, and then proceed to the cafetorium for Monday Meeting. These meetings provide weekly opportunities for our entire student body to come together as a community for morning prayers and announcements, and also provide us with opportunities to recognize students for their achievements, both inside and outside of school. (Whenever we are off on a Monday due to a holiday, we will not meet as a school that week.)

Students who arrive after 8:00 a.m. will be considered tardy and should report to the Main Office.

Pre-K4 and Kindergarten/Pre-1st classes will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. during the first three days of the school year (August 21 – 23).
