Dear Holy Spirit Prep Families,
Two weeks ago, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, HSP welcomed about 40 alumni back home for HSP’s annual “Pigskin Classic” event. It was fun to welcome them back, and to spend time with them as they reminisced about their experiences at HSP. I even played in the football game - a decision I regretted for about 3 days until the soreness and limping subsided!
Meeting and mingling with these alumni highlighted the positive impact HSP made on their lives. It was encouraging and inspiring to see how HSP changes lives, especially as we continue through the recent transition to refocus our efforts on development of critical thinking, evangelization, and an understanding of objective truth - which will always exist despite the messages bombarding us from an anti-Christian materialistic society.
One HSP alum, Sarah Skinner, who attended HSP from Kindergarten through 6th grade was recently named a Rhodes Scholar. A Senior at the United States Naval Academy, Sarah is an honors political science major with a Chinese minor. Sarah has held multiple leadership posts at the Naval Academy and currently serves as a Company Commander responsible for 150 midshipmen. Sarah will pursue a Master of Philosophy in international relations at Oxford University, and then continue her naval service.
The designation of Rhodes Scholars is an elite achievement. Selections are based on academic achievement, integrity, unselfishness, respect for others, leadership, and physical vigor. Notice that the criteria for selection basically represent a fulfillment of virtues we teach and reinforce in our students every day at HSP. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines virtue as "a habitual and firm disposition to do the good." These include prudence, justice, temperance, courage, faith, hope, and charity - all an increasing focus of our Catholic, classical education for the 21st century. Congratulations to Sarah for all she has accomplished! HSP is proud to have been a part of her strong foundation.
We welcome alumni back home again over Christmas break with our Alumni Christmas Brunch and Christmas Eve Mass. We invite you to join us for this special Christmas Eve Mass in Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 2:00 pm on December 24.
As we quickly head toward Christmas and the end of another year, I sincerely thank our faculty and staff for their hard work and dedication, especially in the challenging circumstances we face with labor shortages and other COVID-related stressors. I also thank you - our HSP families for your commitment, prayers, and support for this amazing school.
The struggles we face as we continue our path improving an emphasis on critical thinking, evangelization, and an understanding of objective truth in our students are righteous - and worth the sacrifice. Our focus as a community should be on remaining steadfast, and faithful in trust that God is in charge - and we are simply His instruments.
Psalm 34: 16-23
The eyes of the LORD are directed toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.
The LORD’s face is against evildoers to wipe out their memory from the earth.
The righteous cry out, the LORD hears and he rescues them from all their afflictions.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.
Many are the troubles of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him from them all.
He watches over all his bones; not one of them shall be broken.
Evil will slay the wicked; those who hate the righteous are condemned.
The LORD is the redeemer of the souls of his servants; and none are condemned who take refuge in him.
In Christ

Holy Spirit Prep was honored to host former US Senator, Mrs. Kelly Loeffler, on campus on Wednesday. Mrs. Loeffler attended Mass with our High School students, visited classrooms, met with some students and had discussions with members of our Administration.
Students welcomed the opportunity to ask pertinent questions and engage in discussions about current events with Mrs. Loeffler.
St. Nicholas never disappoints. Students received a treat from St. Nicholas on December 6, the feast of St. Nicholas. A tradition enjoyed year after year by preschool, Lower School, Middle School and High School students alike.
Pigskin Classic Returns!
The sun was brightly shining, there was a crisp chill in the air, and the alumni were ready to play a little football. On Friday, November 26th, the day after Thanksgiving, a group of HSP alumni decided to skip “Black Friday” shopping and take the field to resurrect the long-time tradition of the Pigskin Classic.
Spanning graduate classes from 2007 to 2021, alumni stepped onto the field to play a friendly game of flag football, while being cheered on from the sidelines by more graduates and their families. The competition began with a prayer from Timmy Moots (2012) to protect the players and to let everyone have fun. His prayer worked on both accounts! The only casualty was to Marco Silva (2012), who immediately blew out one of his football cleats and blamed it on “not being used for the past 10 years”. One of the highlights of the game was Trey House (2012) catching a pass and running 50 yards for a touchdown. Trey admitted he has never run that far or that fast. There was even a guest-player appearance by Dr. Ed Lindekugel, who played the whole game with the alumni. He had a great time, even catching a pass and running backwards for 10 yards; however, Advil may have been Dr. L’s best friend over the next few days following the game.
Once the final whistle blew ending the friendly and competitive game, the graduates and their families enjoyed an All-Star breakfast from the Waffle House Food Truck. The alumni had a chance to catch their breath and catch up with each other over cheesy eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and, of course, waffles. Quite tasty!!
The 2022 Pigskin Classic promises to be a bit bigger, but definitely not more competitive.
The next alumni event to be resurrected is the Alumni Christmas Eve brunch. Merry Christmas to all, and God bless us, everyone!

Dear Families in Christ,
Happy Advent! Almost Christmas! This month in the Lower and Middle School we are going over the virtue of service, which is very appropriate during this season, as someone once said, “there is more joy in giving, than in receiving.”
Jesus’ whole life was one of service. He tells us he came to serve and not be served (cfr Mt 20:28, and Jn 13). From this phrase HSP receives our moto, “Ministrare non ministrari.” John tells us the story of how Jesus served his disciples by washing their feet. I find that story very enlightening as we reflect on Christian service. After washing their feet, Jesus explains his action to them. He says that He is their teacher, and they must follow His example, but He also adds another secret to His acts of service, He calls them His friends. I think these two aspects are what separate the Christian virtue of service from just doing social work.
Jesus sets an example for us. In our effort to serve others, we do it to imitate Jesus. The gospels give us countless examples of how Jesus served during His life, not just of washing feet, but also curing the sick, feeding the poor, teaching God’s people, and even doing His chores around the house as a child. Doing works of service is essential to Christ’s life and therefore should also be in the life of His disciples. St Paul says that at the end of our lives we will be asked, ‘what we have done for our brethren.’
The second aspect of His explanation helps us understand this first one even more. Christ doesn’t serve from an elevated state. He puts himself on the same level as us. He calls us his friends. We are able to serve all those around us, whether rich or poor, old or young, not depending on race or ethnicity, because we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. This is the true reason of service. Mother Theresa is a great example of service, she served the poorest of the poor around the world because she discovered Christ in everybody. We should serve others because we are friends in Christ.
During this Christmas season, we are reminded of God’s love for us, as we wonder at His Incarnation. We hear so many Christmas songs that are all about love, it’s like the whole world knows that this season is permeated with love. As Christians we are blessed to know where this love comes from. We can love those around us because we have been loved. We give what we have received. What a great season of the year to be able to truly love those around us because we have been loved by God in creation, through his life, and continually today through the sacraments.
As we contemplate God’s love for us, we see we can’t just give from our surplus, but it is part of our experience of being Christians. St Paul says, “the love of Christ urges us on.” The love of Christ gives us the reason, it challenges us, and it also encourages us to discover this love in the acts of service we do. We don’t serve because we have some leftovers, but because we believe that even in the poorest of the poor, we can find our brother and sister, and though them our true identity in God’s family.
I pray that during this Christmas season as we contemplate how God has served us, it may encourage us to love similarly and find our true fulfillment, serving those closest to us.
God bless!
Fr Andrew, LC

Saints - Pope John Paul II, Pope Francis
Solidarity is “standing with all humans in their physical and spiritual needs” (Gal 3:28)
“Solidarity is not a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far. On the contrary, it is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.” -Pope John Paul II
