To date, we have 47% parent support for the Annual Fund. Please help us reach 100% by end of January! Pledge now and pay by June.
Why is my participation in the Annual Fund important? The first question that most outside constituencies ask before making a gift is, "What do your board, staff and parents contribute?" It is so important that we show support from within before we go to outside sources for contributions. Participation in the Annual Fund demonstrates to others that we, as one of the closest groups to the School, support our mission. What better way to motivate other groups to give?
The Annual Fund is the school’s largest and first fundraising priority, which supports resources and educational initiatives for students and faculty not covered by tuition alone. The Annual Fund allows the school to respond to immediate needs and make improvements that directly benefit our children.
The success of our Annual Fund depends on the participation of every member of the school community – parents, grandparents, trustees, faculty, staff, former parents and grandparents, alumni, friends, foundations and corporations. This school year, we aim to raise $535,000 with 100% commitment from our current parents.

Pope Francis' new book, The Name of God is Mercy
Pope Francis is one of the most fascinating and beloved personages in recent memory. But we can often find his ministry rather puzzling because we tend to view Francis in a modern, politically-charged way. This talk will consider the challenging ingenuity of Francis’s papacy, from his visit to America, his recent letter on the environment, and even his surprising in-flight interviews, and what all this means for our lives and the Church.
Kyle Pietrantonio, HSP's Head of School, will present his annual address to the HSP community in McDonough Hall. In his address, Mr. Pietrantonio will discuss the state of the school, including updates from our admissions, college counseling, and development programs; an overview of our recent accreditation visit; and what's in store for HSP over the next few years.

Each year, all graduating seniors have the opportunity to go on a senior trip to Vatican City and Rome. Students planning to make the trip are expected to pay their way, which can pose financial challenges for some. To help defray costs, "Roma" was born. Every year, the seniors produce a fun-filled evening of auction items, entertainment, Italian pasta dinner, and desserts. They utilize their talents: singing, dancing, art, baking, serving, etc. to create what has come to be a memorable night for both participants and guests!
One of the most anticipated features of the evening is the Senior Servant Auction. Many of the senior students will advertise their various talents (everything from yard work and babysitting to tutoring younger students to car washing and house painting). Roma guests have the opportunity to bid on the seniors. Winning bidders will have the chance to utilize their Senior Servant on Senior Service Day in May (after their final exams). Questions? Contact Mike Verlander at mverlander@holyspiritprep.org.

A group of 20 Upper School students and their chaperones had an adventure this week when they traveled to Washington, DC, for the annual March for Life, a pro-life demonstration on the National Mall marking the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Their trip was extended by several days as Winter Storm Jonas ripped through the mid-Atlantic, cancelling flights out of the area for three days.
The team, making do initially as guests of the Knights of Columbus in one of their DC halls, but facing the specter of several extra days in the District, were relieved to secure hotel accomodations. "I think that the best part of the trip was finally getting to a hotel and taking a shower after two days," said senior Reeves Holden. They did make the morning events of the March for Life, including a Mass at the Verizon Center, but were snowed out of the main March for Life event on the National Mall.
The team made the best of their extended stay: hiking to Mass at nearby St. Michael's through the snow, helping the occasional stranded motorists, and -reportedly - lots and lots of snowball fights.
Despite the unexpected snowfall, the team said the trip was worth it. "It was a pilgrimage," Connor Whelan said. "Like Fr. Juan said, abortion was legalized in Washington, DC, and this trip is a pilgrimage to honor the martyrdom of the unborn."
"We bonded," Reeves added. "We made memories that last a lifetime. I will hate snow for a lifetime."
The team finally returned when airports resumed flights this Monday morning. Reeves said, surely echoing the sentiments of her tired chaperones, "Oh my gosh, I was so relieved to be home."
Since 1989, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has "invested in students who have demonstrated leadership not only in academics, but most importantly, in dedication and actions that positively impact others. What these students have in common is a passion for service that was developed at an early age and continued throughout their college and professional careers." Each year, the Foundation grants 100 students (this year, the Foundation has committed more funds and intends to award 150 scholars) from across the nation a $20,000 college scholarship, recognizing the positive impact they had on their community.
Holy Spirit Prep's Head Girl, Lauren Bohling, is currently a semi-finalist for the Coca-Cola Scholars award.
Holy Spirit Prep also supports the program through the commitment of its Director of College Counseling, Jeremy Sale, as a reader. Jeremy has joined faculty from Ivy League institutions, deans of admission from highly selective colleges, other prep school college counselors, and other educational leaders in sorting through over 2,000 semifinalist applications to select the finalists for the Coca-Cola Scholars program. "It's incredibly rewarding and humbling," Jeremy said, "to review the achievements of the most community-minded teenagers in America, and reward those students who truly deserve to be recognized on a national level."
Jeremy has committed to the program for three years.
Holy Spirit Prep began processing payments for the 2016-17 school year in December. The option to pay in one lump sum expired on January 1st. The required first payment for the two- or ten- payment plan will process the same week it did in 2015, but no later than February 1, 2016.
Because HSP operates under a continuous enrollment system, no additional paperwork is required to maintain your enrollment for 2016-17; it will automatically renew. Families seeking financial assistance will have to submit a regular, updated financial statement. Need-based financial aid information is available here. Families expecting to withdraw from the school can access details on that process here.
It is important to keep your payment information with the school current so that your students’ tuition payment is processed. Any tuition plan chosen but not met will automatically default to the next available payment plan.
Thank you for entrusting your children to our care! We remain grateful for the privilege and great responsibility we have in providing a pre-eminent Catholic school experience to our students.
Varsity girls and boys basketball both defeated the Griffin Christian Crusaders last Thursday evening. Holy Spirit Prep's Lady Cougars defeated the Griffin Crusaders 62-16 to start the night of GISA Region 1-AAA action. The night was capped with a 69-33 victory by the Cougar boys.
In the girls' game, Holy Spirit Prep jumped out to a huge lead in the first quarter and didn't look back en route to the big 62-16 win. The boys' game was another blowout, though the Crusaders challenged Holy Spirit Prep the entire game.
A boys varsity matchup on Friday against Dominion Christian was rescheduled for February 1 under the threat of winter weather.

During Catholic Schools Week the Media Center is having its annual book swap. Students are asked to bring in books to swap with other students. These books should be in good condition and ones that your children have either outgrown or tired of and would like to share with others. They should have your permission prior to bringing the books into school.
During this week, when each class has their Media Center time, the students that have brought in books to swap are allowed to select up to three books from those that have been brought in. This is an enjoyable time for all our students as they are able to ‘buy’ new books by trading in their old books.
For those students that have Media Center Class on Friday, the student may come to the Media Center at the discretion of their teacher.
