Football Starts Season 2-0

Posted: 8/30/2018

Congratulations to our varsity football players who won their first two games! Although the boys had to start their season on the road, they still performed against Hearts Academy and dominated the field. The final score was a staggering 53-20, and the Cougars saw their first victory.

Their second game was the first home game of the season. The boys faced off against Solid Rock Academy in an exciting game that started slow but kept spectators on the edge of their seats into the fourth quarter. Despite allowing Solid Rock to take the lead at the half, our players came back strong early into the third quarter when senior Josh Oliver broke free for a 79-yard touchdown run, making the score 12-22 at the start of the fourth quarter.

At the start of the final quarter, our boys forced Solid Rock to punt. The snap rolled back and the punter fumbled, allowing sophomore Patrick Radosta to recover and return the ball to the Solid Rock six-yard-line. On the next snap, sophomore William Schulman punched in those six yards for another touchdown. Senior Angel Anaya made the extra point, making the score 19-22.

After trading a few punts, we allowed Solid Rock to score on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 3:41 remaining in the game. On the first offensive play, we answered with a 74-yard touchdown run by Schulman. With the extra point, the score was 26-28.

After recovering the onside kick, our players made their final drive. The 11 plays were hindered by an injury to quarterback Oliver, two illegal procedure penalties, and a fumble recovered by freshman Micah Gunderson. Despite the setbacks, we made it down to the eight-yard-line for the final 25-yard field goal attempt to win the game. Senior Conner McKittrick fired back a great snap, Gunderson set the ball on the block, and Anaya's kick was good! The final score was 29-28.

The next game is this Friday, August 31 at 7:30pm against Johnson Ferry Christian Academy at Lassiter High School. If you are still in town, come out and support our boys!
