A Safety Concern Regarding Instagram

Posted: 5/3/2017

Below is a reprint of a letter sent from a local Catholic school to its families:

Dear Parents,

It has come to our attention that a sexual predator is currently actively pursuing young girls in the Atlanta area via Instagram. Unsolicited pictures and solicitation requests have been sent via Instagram direct message to girls attending local private schools. The police have been notified, however this predator is following over 600 young girls, many in grades six through eight.

We urge you to go and check your child’s Instagram account immediately, and see if this man is following your child or has tried to contact them via direct message. He was operating under several Instagram usernames including: Westminster_Boi, Atlanta Beauty Agency, Instagrammer, and LongJohn319.

Please be aware that other families in the Atlanta area have filed police reports, contacted Instagram with complaints, and have contacted The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cyber Tip Line. Please do not hesitate to contact these groups as you see fit. You should take a screen shot of inappropriate messages before deleting or blocking the sender, as each documented message can carry a felony charge.

Technology is an incredible tool and social media apps are very enticing. Please use this opportunity to talk with your child about only accepting follow requests or direct message requests from people they know.

Thank you for your partnership in ensuring safety both on and off the screens. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
