Holy Spirit Prep is proud to announce the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2014, and the guest speaker for this year’s graduation exercises.
Carson Hooper has been named this year’s valedictorian. Having attended HSP since preschool, Carson has experienced the entire runway of academic and spiritual formation at Holy Spirit Prep. Among her many accolades, Carson is this year’s STAR student, a Georgia Scholar, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a Girl Scout Gold Award winner. She has demonstrated her leadership as co-president of the ONE apostolate, through the Girl Scout Leadership Institute, and as an Elite Altar Server at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She has served the school, the Atlanta community, and the greater community through Saint Joseph’s Cohort, and demonstrated her athletic prowess as a varsity soccer player.
>Carson’s parents, Christopher and Anne Marie, were delighted to hear of their daughter’s recognition,
We are so very proud of Carson. She has worked hard for many years to achieve this level of success…. From the first day she entered Holy Spirit Prep back in Pre-K2 there have been many exceptional teachers; however, we would like to acknowledge the high school advanced placement teachers who truly know their subject and inspired an even greater desire to learn. We know Carson is ready for the next chapter in her life and will continue to represent Holy Spirit Prep well.
Christopher Sequeira is this year’s salutatorian, and has attended HSP nearly his entire life, joining the school community in first grade. Like Carson, Chris has taken on a range of leadership and service roles during his formation at Holy Spirit Prep. Among his many accolades, Chris is the winner of this year’s Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award and AP Scholar with Honor. He serves as president of Delta Omega, HSP’s all-male service fraternity, carries membership in three academic honor societies, and participated in Model UN. Chris is also an all-region varsity soccer player.
On hearing the news of his recognition, Chris’ parents, Manuel and Theresa, said
We are very proud of Chris’ achievements, but we know that the wonderful teachers at Holy Spirit and the learning environment based on strong ethics and Catholic values has played a major role in making him what he is today. We are excited to see what lies in the future for HSP. I know that Chris will always be a proud alumnus of HSP. We, as parents, are confident in the knowledge that he has the tools to take on bigger challenges out there to succeed as a human being, and child of Christ.
Both Carson and Chris have accepted offers from Georgia Tech among an abundance of college acceptances. Both will enter the university’s Industrial Engineering program.
Holy Spirit Prep is also pleased to announce its guest speaker for this year’s graduation proceedings. Dr. Mary McDonald is a lifelong educator and passionate about Catholic education. The author and host of radio show Seize the Day has taught elementary, high school, and college students; served as principal of several Catholic schools; and oversaw an unprecedented period of development as Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Memphis.
Dr. McDonald now serves as an educational adviser to the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, through the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), and in various capacities to state governments, universities, and school systems. A friend to Holy Spirit Prep, Dr. McDonald has worked closely with the school as an ACE consultant, supporting the school in the development of its three-year strategic plan.
Holy Spirit Prep’s graduation exercises will begin at 10am on Tuesday, May 27th, with a Baccalaureate Mass, followed by Commencement in the sanctuary of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
