Thirteen of Holy Spirit Prep’s varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders made their parents, teachers, coaches, and the HSP community proud when they attended a Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) Cheer Camp at Lake Lanier June 11-14. Led by coaches and HSP moms Hilary MacIsaac and Denise Gunderson, the girls trained for a week with UCA professionals. They worked on developing their cheering skills, performing demos, and competing against 11 cheering squads from across Georgia.
The girls brought home a dizzying array of awards from the camp. They earned:
• three Superior ribbons (the highest award possible) for their cheer and
• one Excellent ribbon
• the Most Improved Squad award
• 1st place in the Sideline Cheer Competition
The girls showed how good they could be off the floor, too, earning the camp’s coveted “spirit stick” four times in four days. Spirit sticks are a big deal at cheer camp: earning a spirit stick means your team is one of the most spirited teams at camp. On the third day of camp, the team won the award for Top Spirit Squad of the Day.
For the ambitious cheerleader at UCA camp, there is the daunting option of auditioning for the UCA All-American program, a program only 10% of the cheerleaders will be selected for. Sarah Gunderson and Andi Rozzelle, representing our varsity and junior varsity teams, boldly tried out for All-American and made the cut. More than just an honorific title, these girls will have the opportunity to perform with the All-American team at the UCA Thanksgiving Tour at Walt Disney World the last week in November.
We are proud of the accomplishments, accolades, and – most importantly – the attitudes of our cheer team as they represented Holy Spirit Prep at cheer camp, and we are looking forward to the spirit they will bring to campus this coming school year.
